A Unique Project in Essex: Converting a Water Tower into a Family Home

At okoHaus, we’re fortunate to work on some truly special projects. In our latest YouTube video, we visit Widdington, near Saffron Walden in Essex, to explore a fascinating water tower conversion.

We take a closer look at the distinctive cladding system and how this former piece of municipal infrastructure has been transformed into a warm, inviting family home.

Architectural Details and Design Challenges

There are plenty of details we wanted to share in this video, including the carefully designed cornices and guttering. The view from the top of the tower is spectacular. We'll admit, both your host, John Lewis from okoHaus, and the cameraman felt a bit uneasy with the height, but the scenery made it well worth the climb.

The cylindrical shape of the tower presents some unusual architectural challenges. But from the panoramic balconies to the central shaft now converted into a lift, this is a home that breaks the mould.

Modern Additions and Interior Highlights

We also highlight the newly built sections, including a spacious kitchen and living area featuring circular skylights and large windows. These design choices bring in plenty of natural light and add to the open, modern feel of the home.

Insulation, Sustainability, and Building Systems

As with many of our projects, we’ve used the Illbruck i3 installation sealant system to improve airtightness and sound insulation. We also take a closer look at the impressive roof windows in the kitchen, which contribute to both energy performance and aesthetics.

The insulation strategy across both the original structure and the new elements is particularly noteworthy. Solar panels and other energy-efficient features have been integrated to enhance the building’s sustainability.

Honouring the Past While Embracing the Future

The contractor has done a brilliant job of cutting new windows into the thick concrete walls and achieving a thoughtful balance between old and new. It’s rare to see a project that brings together industrial heritage and contemporary design so successfully.

Follow the Journey

We’re excited to see how the project develops and look forward to returning to the Widdington Water Tower as progress continues.
