In the latest instalment from our YouTube channel, we visit Shingle Street, near Bawdsey and Orford on the Suffolk coast. Shingle Street is a remote hamlet, around five miles from Woodbridge and just a short drive from our main showroom. Facing the North Sea, it’s defined by wind-swept shingle beaches, open skies and salt marshes. The area is known for its isolation and raw, exposed beauty, making it a favourite among artists, writers and others seeking peace and solitude.
Homes built in Shingle Street must withstand harsh coastal weather, including salt air, intense UV exposure and strong winds. For this reason, we supply Velfac windows, which are designed for durability, resistant to corrosion and offer a high level of airtightness.
In this latest episode of our YouTube series, okoHaus founder John Lewis takes us through the extensive renovation and extension of what was once a small house. It is now a beautiful home, with converted outbuildings and a new dormer, transforming it into a two-storey building.
We worked closely with the builders to align floor levels and ceiling heights. We also ensured all window thresholds were perfectly placed across both the original structure and the new extension. Velfac frames were selected for their internal frameless reveals, which help maintain the clean lines of this remarkable renovation. The builder delivered an outstanding finish, including seamless alignment with the timber flooring.
Several types of Velfac windows were chosen for this project, including:
Velfac Ribo aluminium clad timber opening doors
Top-guided windows
Side-hung windows
Sliding casement doors
Casement doors
The window setbacks and sill projections were carefully designed to maintain weather protection while preserving the frameless appearance that highlights the epic views across this unique stretch of the Suffolk coast.
This was a hybrid installation for us at okoHaus. We installed the doors, while the contractor, with guidance from our team, fitted the remaining windows. Some of the unique weather challenges of this site are perfectly addressed by the Velfac system. Being Scandinavian, it is ideally suited to demanding environmental conditions.
In projects like this, it’s crucial to install high-quality glazing that will stand the test of time. Velfac windows are a sound long-term investment.
There are many elements that make this project a showcase for Velfac windows. If you’re planning a renovation, whether on the coast or elsewhere in the UK, get in touch to learn how we can help you achieve your goals in an aesthetic, sustainable and reliable way.
