Supplying and installing multiple window brands

Some of our favourite projects involve supplying and installing more than one brand of window that we offer and support. In the latest video on our popular YouTube channel, okoHaus founder John Lewis takes us on a tour of a fascinating and extensive new build in Saffron Walden, Essex.

A picturesque property with smart design choices

During the video, we also take a look at a beautiful bespoke kitchen being fitted by Regent St James. The property is located on a quiet cul-de-sac in picturesque Saffron Walden, and the design really makes the most of its surroundings.

Bringing in more natural light

In the first part of the video, we explore the dormer windows added to the first floor. These offer the owners sweeping views over Saffron Walden and the surrounding countryside, and they’re a great example of the clear design rationale behind the project.

We’ve mentioned in several of our videos that installing new windows with modern glazing can let in significantly more light than traditional glass. It’s a bit like going from standard definition to high definition in how the light enters your home.

A music room with soundproofing in mind

Later in the video, we learn more about the importance of soundproofing when we see a stunning vaulted, two-storey-high music room, which, once complete, will house a grand piano.

Tailored details for comfort and usability

This project includes a few bespoke elements produced at the Rationel factory. For example, in one of the bedrooms, the window handles are positioned within 1.4 metres of the floor, making them more accessible for people with reduced mobility.

In the bathroom, we supplied satin obscure glazing. Unlike some other types of obscure glass, this matches the appearance of the other first-floor windows from the outside – subtle, clean, and private.

Stone sills and skilled craftsmanship

Another interesting bathroom detail is the use of a stone window board instead of timber, which fits perfectly with the Rationel windows.

The building contractor, BK Sargeant & Son, has done an excellent job preparing the openings for the window installation. Attention to detail at this stage makes a big difference to the final result.

Seamless connection to the outdoors

We’ve already mentioned the beautiful kitchen, but one standout feature is the large Solarlux Combiline aluminium-clad timber bi-fold doors. These pair extremely well with the Rationel system and perform brilliantly in air-tightness tests.

They’re available in a wide range of colours, helping ensure the interior finish ties in seamlessly with the kitchen design.

High-performance windows with Passive House credentials

Although this isn’t a certified Passive House project, the windows we’ve supplied certainly meet Passive House standards. The Rationel Auraplus range used here delivers excellent performance – 0.78 U-value with triple glazing and 1.29 with double.

With aluminium on the outside and timber on the inside, they offer a robust blend of contemporary and traditional aesthetics that suit this home perfectly.

A rewarding collaboration

It’s always rewarding to visit projects like this, where design intent, build quality, and product performance align so well.

This is a great example of the kind of work we do, where multiple contractors collaborate closely to deliver a superb result for the client.
