In today’s episode from the okoHaus YouTube channel, founder John Lewis takes us through a fascinating extension project on an old farmhouse along the shores of the River Stour. This rural location enjoys panoramic views up the river, making it a truly special setting.
Due to the exposed nature of the site, VELFAC windows were chosen for their high-performance glazing and thoughtful design, which complements the character of the property. We visit the project just as the windows are beginning to be installed. This is a carefully considered modern extension to a classic Essex farmhouse, and as John walks us through the space, we see how old and new blend together in a way that is both practical and visually coherent.
We explore some of the project’s unique features, including copper cladding and guttering. It is a build full of interesting architectural details. We also show what really goes into fitting VELFAC windows and the level of detail and precision involved. The internal timber frames of the VELFAC system suit the aesthetic of the project brilliantly.
We also introduce the new Illbruck TP670 Compriband product and explain what makes this sealing tape innovative. The three-layer structure of the Illbruck TP670 provides full airtightness without the need for visible internal tapes. This allows for a clean interior finish while maintaining excellent thermal performance.
This episode is also a good showcase for the 180-degree hinges on the casement doors. We discuss why they were used here, along with the space and design considerations required to make them work effectively.
We love working on projects like this and using the VELFAC system to create a seamless blend between the traditional and the modern. If you are planning an extension with sustainability and longevity in mind, please get in touch to find out how we can help.
