Our Sustainable Journey: Partnering with Suffolk Wildlife Trust

Updated: Jul 11

In an effort to protect our little blue planet, increasingly more companies are doubling down on sustainability, but it cannot be just a buzzword. We need sustainable solutions more than ever to reduce our environmental footprint and help save our community on a small scale as well as globally. This is why at okoHaus, sustainability is one of our main pillars, and we do everything in our power to implement eco-consciousness for a better tomorrow.

We have undergone a very prominent transformation from being carbon-neutral (C-free) to gaining our Partner in Wildlife status with Suffolk Wildlife Trust. This transition will help us do more for our community and help refocus the impact of our actions.

From Carbon Neutrality to a Meaningful Biodiversity Impact

For years, our goal has been to lessen or eliminate our carbon emissions to gain a true carbon-neutral status. We have accomplished such a task by means such as reforestation projects and renewable energy sources. However, carbon neutrality was not enough for us, and we wanted to go the extra mile.

Our efforts toward carbon neutrality were highly beneficial for greenhouse gas emissions, but we realised that we need to do more for the threats our planet faces like habitat loss, pollution, resource depletion, and biodiversity decline. As such, we needed to actively participate in biodiversity conservation by proactively protecting and restoring ecosystems vital for diverse life forms coupled with our reduction of greenhouse gases.

It’s a misconception that sustainability stops at the environmental level. In truth, sustainability extends to social and economic domains as well. Should all three sectors adopt sustainable practices, we would be looking at a safer and more resilient future. At okoHaus, we encourage other companies and businesses to follow suit and join hands for a happier planet.

We started exploring other organisations with a similar mindset in protecting wildlife and natural habitats and the journey led to us partnering with Suffolk Wildlife Trust, a leading conservation charity with a mission to safeguard the county's wildlife and wild places.

Partnering with Suffolk Wildlife Trust allows us to have a broader approach to our sustainability goals and gives us the extra kick we need to safeguard the environment with more comprehensive efforts and a helping hand we definitely needed. This partnership is also a testament to our commitment to the environment beyond carbon neutrality.

Benefits of Our Partnership with Suffolk Wildlife Trust

  1. Enhancing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Through our partnership, we want to go beyond conventional business practices and engage in exciting activities and initiatives that have a positive impact on society and the environment.

  2. Biodiversity Conservation: Other than helping humans, we are committed to helping other kinds of species by protecting and restoring natural habitats, preserving a diverse range of species, and helping to maintain healthy ecosystems. For one, our little non-human friends will appreciate us, and we will be supporting local biodiversity and supporting the region’s unique wildlife.

  3. Climate Mitigation: Heat waves and freezing winters can in fact be stopped, and we want to do everything we can to help mitigate climate change and restore healthy ecosystems that absorb and store carbon dioxide.

  4. Education and Awareness: Get ready for more science classes because, through our partnership with Suffolk Wildlife Trust, we aim to introduce educational initiatives and raise awareness about wildlife conservation with our trusted employees and the wider community. We hope that these initiatives will lead to a better understanding and adoption of environmental responsibility within the organisation.

  5. Sustainable Construction Practices: Construction can have a massive effect on our environment, but fret not, because there are always more sustainable construction practices and we aim to integrate more of them into our projects at okoHaus. These practices include eco-friendly building materials, waste reduction, and energy-efficient designs such as the ones we use for our doors and windows.

  6. Community Engagement: We want to work together with local communities to promote wildlife-friendly initiatives. These initiatives can be both beneficial and incredibly entertaining, such as events, volunteering opportunities, and support for local conservation projects.

The Road to a Sustainable Future: Our Commitment to Change

We believe that actions speak louder than words, especially when it comes to sustainability and our commitment to it. This commitment is highlighted by our partnership with Suffolk Wildlife Trust and transitioning from our previous carbon neutrality.

We may not be the first to implement biodiverse solutions, but we certainly hope we won’t be the last, especially in investing in biodiversity conservation and sustainable practices in the construction industry. Our transformation proves that businesses can go that extra mile from offsetting emissions to totally green practices, and thus do better for our planet. We cannot wait to see the positive impact all our efforts will have on Suffolk’s wildlife and natural heritage.
